Corporates make Facebook promotion apps for consumer promos all the time. Qantas have created just such a Facebook promotion app to draw attention to their fleet of new A380 planes. In case you’re looking for ideas around building your own Facebook app, look no further.
This post includes step-by-step screenshots showcasing the functionality created by Qantas in this Facebook promotion app.
STEP 1: The app tells you what you could win if you enter the promo
STEP 2: As soon as you click the ‘Enter Now’ button, the Facebook app asks you for permissions to access your Facebook profile data. In the case of this promotion, you’ll be exposing your basic info (name, gender, locale), your email address and access to your photos. You’ll see in a bit why the app needs this. You can select which group of people see posts made by this app on your timeline, but you can’t proceed without clicking the ‘Go to App’ button, in effect allowing the app the requested data access permissions.
STEP 3: The app then asks you for an extended permission. The ‘Win a trip to LA’ app wants to be able to make status update posts, photo posts and other types of posts on your behalf. Some apps don’t make extended permissions mandatory, however this one does. If you click on ‘Skip’ on this step, the app takes you back to STEP 1 and you have to click on ‘Enter Now’ again. However if you do that, you’re not asked for basic permissions again as you’ve already provided the app with those permissions.
STEP 4: The next screen puts your name on a Qantas A380 plane image and provides five input fields where you can select five friends who you’d take on a trip to L.A. if you win.
STEP 5: Clicking on each field brings up a ‘Choose your friends’ dialog box which allows you to search for a friend and select them.
STEP 6: As you start typing in the search box, the friend list filters results.
STEP 7: Steps 5 and 6 need to be complete 5 times. The app doesn’t allow selection of five friends all in one go.
STEP 8: Once you’ve selected your friends, The app asks for your name, email address and Qantas frequent flyer number (not mandatory). You’re also asked to write three very short (upto 5 words long) phrases that best describe the new Qantas A380 aircraft. By doing this, Qantas have made this promotion a ‘game of skill’ instead of a ‘game of chance’. This means that the promoter is able to pick any person as a winner at their discretion. There isn’t a random element to the prize draw.
STEP 9: Finally, like any self-respecting social media app, this app prompts you to share the result of your entry with your Facebook friends on your wall. In this case, the result is a dynamically generated image of the plane with your and your selected friends’ names on it. You can edit the default personal message provided.
STEP 10: A ‘Thank you’ message is shown on successful posting.
This is what the wall post image looks like.
